EasyDC-FOS Shares Key Research Results at Jicable HVDC’25 in Turin

The EasyDC-FOS project was presented at the International Symposium on HVDC Cable Systems – Jicable HVDC’25, held from 20 to 22 October 2025 in Turin. The event brought together industry representatives, researchers, and technology developers to discuss the latest advances and ongoing challenges in HVDC transmission systems.

Throughout the symposium, project partners shared the latest progress and key technical outcomes from EasyDC-FOS, contributing to discussions on the next generation of HVDC cable technologies. A dedicated tutorial on monitoring systems for HVDC applications was delivered by Manuel Muñoz (RDT-Lumiker) and Ralf Albrecht (AP Sensing), with support from Javier Bengoechea and Juan Luis García (RDT-Lumiker). The session attracted a substantial audience and provided an in-depth overview of monitoring technologies tailored for high-voltage direct current environments.

RDT-Lumiker presented their latest work on photonics-based solutions, including Optical Current Transformers (OCTs) and sensing systems traditionally applied in AC environments and now being adapted to DC applications through the EasyDC-FOS project. The team also introduced their new Current and Partial Discharge Fibre Optic Monitoring System, outlining its capabilities and potential benefits for HVDC assets.

AP Sensing contributed with an overview of Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing technologies and the role of DTS, DSS and DAS in continuous cable monitoring. Their presentation highlighted how these systems enable real-time temperature, strain and vibration measurements, facilitate early fault detection and asset surveillance, and achieve sensing ranges of up to 300 km using optical amplification.

In addition, Espen Doedens, Ph.D., Nexans Product & System Responsible for HVDC Extruded, delivered one of the opening lectures of the conference, providing a comprehensive review of the main milestones in HVDC extruded cable system development over the past two decades.

EasyDC-FOS was also featured at the RDT-Lumiker booth, where the project roll-up, brochure, and motion-graphics video offered attendees a concise overview of the project’s objectives and ongoing innovations. The exhibition space enabled project partners to engage with visitors and strengthen interactions across the HVDC community.

The symposium provided an excellent opportunity for collaboration and exchange among colleagues from RDT-Lumiker, AP Sensing, Nexans, Energinet, Ampacimon and BASQUENERGY Cluster.
